Enjoy some SUP lessons at Bracklesham Bay
Based in West Sussex, Bracklesham Bay is our favourite spot because it offers lots of different conditions for holiday makers and watersports enthusiasts. It could be totally flat calm water one day and small waves the next, so this really is a mixed bag location that everyone can enjoy all year round.
You’ve got a grassy area by Billys on the Beach and then the steep pebble bank with a car park right by so it is really convenient for open water paddle boarding.
Why Paddle Board at Bracklesham Bay?
Flat water
When it’s not windy or a light offshore breeze we get totally flat water, which is perfect for total beginners and kids. In these conditions it is an easy launch, no current or rips and generally a safe place to paddle.
Choppy conditions
If the wind picks up it will get choppy very quickly. This can make for more challenging conditions for beginners and we always suggest that everyone knows how to self rescue and paddle on heir knees, in case they get caught out.
Part of our paddleboarding lessons includes self rescue as it it such an important skill to have, as is remounting the board in deep water and unaided.
Waves
If we’re lucky enough to get waves, then we sometimes run surf sup lessons at Bracklesham Bay and this is great fun. Anyone looking to surf at Bracklesham will have a great time, but definitely check the swell period and wind forecast.
We can get decent size swell, but there needs to be a big swell in the Atlantic to make it this far. Generally we’ll get a wind blown swell which can bring some nice waves, especially if the wind then dies off, cleaning it up.
The surrounding area
We have some long sandy beaches at low to mid tide, that then pushes up onto pebbles at high. If you’re not going in the water, you can walk to the left of Bracklesham beach front and head up to Medmerry which is a super nature reserve. Loads of birds and long walks up there for sure.
We have some great local shops and supermarkets to you can stock up on supplies easily enough if you’re staying down for a couple of days.
Tips for a Great Paddle Boarding Experience
- Check the Weather: Always check the weather and sea conditions before heading out to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Use windy app and Tides Near Me app.
- Wetsuits: Obviously this depends on the time of year and you.
- Safety: Always wear a pfd, especially if you’re a beginner. Tell someone you’re out on the wter and be very mindful if the wind is blowing out to see..
