Werner SUP paddles cater for the differing levels of performance

Werner deliver sup paddles that have different levels of performance in mind.  Broken down into Standard, Premium and Ultimate they share many features and materials.

Standard

Paddles that offer Standard Performance give you Werner’s heritage and advanced design features at introductory prices. For those that take a more casual approach to paddling, we still want you to experience the feel of a Werner Paddle on the water. These paddles may not have all the advanced designs features, materials and fit options but we will never give up our core philosophies of light swing weight, balance and smooth stable strokes. Our fiberglass reinforced nylon blades are quite sturdy, so although paying a penalty in swing weight they will be much stronger than lesser quality materials. Our shaft uses a carbon blend to combines light weight and strength. We also spend a lot of time testing flex. With each stroke you’ll feel just the perfect about of flex, making the paddle softer on your joints.

Premium

Paddles that offer Premium Performance give you the right combination of light weight, stiffness and durability. These are also our most impact resistant paddles, for white water, coastal play or just more confidence no matter the use. Swing weight equates to the effort it takes to move your paddle through out the stroke, and with our Premium line it is not much. Stiffness is a key element in blade performance, allowing for more efficiency as the blade fixes less under the load of moving you and your boat. Choose between fiberglass or carbon construction. Carbon gives you the lightest swing weight option and matches the strength, impact and wear resistance of fiberglass with a stealth black carbon look. Fiberglass is a great compromise for those looking for a better value. You still get identical strength and impact and wear resistance. Also, a variety of bright color options with a handcrafted translucent look. Our shaft uses a carbon blend to combines light weight and strength. We also spend a lot of time testing flex. With each stroke you’ll feel just the perfect about of flex, making the paddle softer on your joints.

Ultimate

Our Ultimate performance brings together all of our most advanced designs. Paddles that offer Ultimate Performance have an exceptionally light, buoyant and quiet feel on the water. Our blades designed with more volume creates a blade profile that displaces more water for a significantly lighter, more buoyant feel on the water. The added buoyancy assists the blade from the water at the exit of the stroke. This allows you to use less energy on long paddle outings, creates a more stable brace, and enhances kayak rolls in aerated water. The smooth back profile increases paddle performance by allowing water to flow uninterrupted. This results in smooth, quiet, fluid strokes, in all directions. Our carbon shaft combines light weight with our reputation for strength, derived for the experience of handcrafting paddles for the most extreme users. We also spend quite a bit of time testing flex. With each stroke you feel just the perfect amount of flex, making the paddle softer on your joints. In your hands you feel balance, and our lightest swing weight paddles derive from a combination of our lightest weight carbon and fiberglass. Longer days on the water are ahead. Although our best paddling paddle, the Ultimate performance level does compromise impact resistance for light weight and performance. Strong for its intended use, paddlers should be mindful that these paddles should be used, but not abused.

Blades are more than just Blades

Standard Fiberglass

Our Standard performance fiberglass blades are both lighter and stiffer than our injection molded blades. While they do outweigh our premium blades, their fiberglass construction is the best choice for value while still giving the blade a great look and feel.

Ultimate – Carbon Dynel Reinforced – Whitewater

Our Ultimate performance whitewater blades are far and away our best paddling whitewater paddles. Our engineering team has tested and created the perfect combination of fiberglass, carbon and Kevlar to match light weight with our Bomber strength. To assure confidence in the rigors of the whitewater environment, we mold in a thick Dynel edge guard. A roping material, dynel is impact and abrasion resistant.

Ultimate – Carbon

The carbon materials along with our proprietary foam core, make this this our lightest option in our Ultimate performance line. The proprietary foam core gives the blade volume, Buoyance, and internal strength while allowing for a smooth back face.

Ultimate – Fiberglass

The merging of the durability of fiberglass with the volume of our proprietary foam core make this our more modestly priced option in our Ultimate performance line. With dyed resins we achieve bright colors in these blade options. The proprietary foam core gives the blade volume and internal strength, allowing for a spineless back face.

Premium – Fiberglass

Originally developed in the 70’s and perfected for decades. Our Premium fiberglass blades in HD Graphics or Translucent colors look unlike any other. A true work of art, the perfection in hand craftsmanship can be seen by holding the blades up to the light. These full fiberglass blades provide light swing weight and stiffness for our mid-price point. A foam reinforcement stick provides rigidity.

Fiberglass Reinforced – Injection Molded Nylon

Injection molded fiberglass reinforced nylon blades are impact and wear resistant. This combination of materials allows us to mold the design elements direct from our Premium line but a lower price point. The fiberglass material allows a level of stiffness and light swing weight that is tops in its price category.

Blade Dihedral-Stand Up Paddle Surfing

Our innovative double concave dihedral gives our surfing specific Rip Stick a unique feel on the water. While focused on positioning yourself perfectly for a wave you use a variety of strokes, in a variety of angles. No matter how you pull on the Rip Stick the dihedral creates a self-centering dynamic. No matter how you pull on this paddle it will be stable and flutter free. More comfortable and more efficient. It is also configured for power as the concaves create power pockets. This gives maximum power from a low profile blade shape and smaller overall size. Higher cadence for more speed, less blade in the way for cranking through turns.

Blade Dihedral-Stand Up Paddle

In 1976 Werner Sr. created an new blade design with the objective to of eliminating fatigue caused by blades fluttering when stroked. This latest paddle design had complex 3 dimensional shape on the power face known as Dihedral. This dihedral shape was created to direct water to flow evenly off each side of the blade creating a smooth and stable stroke. Without dihedral water builds up on the power face, this water gets “confused” and in order to expel this build up the blade will flutter back and forth. Therefore, by adding a dihedral angle to our blade design, water is given direction to flow easily off the blade, minimizing flutter. This reduces the gripping effort needed to overcome the flutter and allows you to use a loose grip style of paddling, reducing fatigue and increasing your enjoyment on the water.

12 Degree blade offset.

12 Degree blade to shaft offset is optimal for SUP race. Forward propulsion, going fast. The goal of a racer and thus the need from their paddle. Keeping the blade more vertical through the power phase of the stroke, all the way back to the exit at the heals to be more precise, is made possible with the Grand Prix’s unique 12 degree offset. Since bracing is not as relevant in race the increased offset is not a concern, especially when you weight out the benefits. (Certainly you will need the occational stabilizing stroke and you can perform those, but let’s face it if you’re not paddling hard forward you are not keeping up.)

10 Degree blade offset

10 Degree blade to shaft offset is utilized to help the Versatile use paddler excel. For the paddler who does a bit of everything, some touring, surfing, fishing, fitness, the compromise for forward paddling and bracing is 10 degree. A more shallow offset, like the 7 degree we use for our Rip Stick surf paddle, helps flatten the blades contact point with the water during a brace stroke. This allows more stability and confidence. A steeper offset, like the 12 degree we use for our Grand Prix race paddle, helps keep the blade more vertical through the power phase of the stroke. This gives better forward propulsion when looking to go fast or be more efficient. So by splitting the difference, it allows the all-around paddler to feel good in the surf, while having a more efficient stroke when they go on tour.

7 Degree blade offset

7 Degree Blade to Shaft offset. Perfect for Surfing and whitewater. The ability to brace (use the back face of the blade as a crutch or 3rd leg) is vital in these environments. Paddling through breaking waves or a rapid and to stabilize and change direction when on a wave utilize a brace. Reducing the offset to 7 degrees helps to flatten the blade out and reduces the chance of it diving, giving the paddler more confidence. Now a flatter blade will lift water more during the power phase of the stroke, as opposed to pushing it back and creating forward propulsion. However the shorter, faster strokes needed in surf and whitewater generally never make their way all the way back to the paddler’s feet, offsetting that negative. With that we find 7 degree to be perfect for this user group.

Dynel Edge

“This stuff is tough!” To protect the specialized designs of Ultimate blades, Dynel brings an extremely abrasion and impact resistant edge. Proven on the water since 2002, this material gives added confidence to paddlers buying paddles. Available on our Ultimate paddles, this composite rope material disperses impact to protect the blade during a hard impact. It also greatly slows the wear process with its abrasion resistant properties. Key to protecting your investment if you come in contact with rocks or reef often in your paddling.

Shaft Features

Carbon – Straight

At our highest level of straight shaft, we use 100% carbon materials. Our design team has ensured that this super light weight material is constructed to be strong, and with comfortable flex. Our craftsman hand assemble each to the level of excellence our customers have come to expect.

Carbon – Bent

At one of the most challenging stations in our manufacturing facility, carbon bent shafts come to life. With a high level of attention to detail and dexterity and using 100% of carbon materials. We have developed the right amount of flex, weight and strength.

Whitewater Fiberglass – Straight

Our fiberglass shafts have performed for decades on some of the hardest rivers and are a key component in our Bomber reputation. Designed and tested to combine light weight, comfortable flex and the highest level of strength, our craftsman assure each one is built with pride. We know this shaft is going to live a hard life on the river, with a customer counting on it. A combination of fiberglass materials make up this shaft.

Premium Carbon – Straight

Designed and handcrafted with a significantly higher percentage of carbon materials keep the paddle light weight. The fiberglass mixture makes for a unique textured grip and added strength. Expertly engineered, these shafts will hold up to the rigors of paddling, while maintaining a comfortable flex.

Wrapped FG – Straight

Carefully sourcing the right materials and components is a key element of bringing UPP to our Standard performance paddles. Our comfortable wrapped fiberglass shaft keeps overall paddle weight down. “Wrapped” refers to the process in how these shafts are made, different from our upper end shafts but still meeting our expectations for strength and appropriate flex. We are able to bring these paddle options to you at a more modest price.

SUP-Rip Stick Shaft

Flex is a key element in designing a surf specific paddle. To help reduce stress on the body during the incredible bursts of energy needed when surfing, we reduced the overall flex of the Rip Stick. This is our softest flex amongst our carbon models. By building all of our shafts in our own facility, right in Sultan Wa USA, we have total control of the process. This allows us to adjust how the shaft is laid up, and the materials we choose, to soften flex without sacraficing, performance, strength or weight. Protect your body, stay out longer.

SUP Family Travel

Family Travel. For those looking for ease of travel with their paddle we have Family Adjustable system, but in a break down. Using a solid feeling center joint to break the shaft down, it comes apart small enough to fit into your luggage or I-SUP bag. It still offers our Tweener shaft and a full 16″ of height range, fitting paddlers from 4’10” to 6’2″ with ease. Find Family and Travel on our Vibe and Thrive.

SUP Family Adjustable

Family Adjustable. Using the proven Lever Lock adjustable system, we now offer a full 16″ of height range, fitting paddlers from 4’10” to 6’2″ with a simple and easy to use mechanism. We’ve added some very cool Werner additions to the system, including printing both height and length measurments right on the shaft. Our Tweener diameter shaft only further accommodates the family to fit a wide range of hand sizes comfortably. Find Family and Travel on our Vibe and Thrive.

SUP Shafts

With utmost attention to detail, design and craftsmanship, our shafts are all handmade at our production facility in Sultan WA, USA. For each model, we are able to optimize the shaft construction by placing our choice of fiberglass and carbon materials exactly where their needed. This assures the perfect combination of light weight, flex and the strength that Werner Paddles has earned its reputation of reliability for. Whether our straight shaft, or bent, our shafts have a unique feel. Notice the texture, the indexing. Designed to give you more comfort and control and to be able to feel the precision of every one of your strokes.

SUP Palm Grip

Our custom fit palm grip is the most comfortable grip on the market today. You will find that you will be able to keep a loose grip, even in the toughest of conditions, while the width of the full palm grip enables more blade control. A loose grip reduces fatigue and wear and tear on your joints. Small Fit utilizes a sized down version of our palm grip to fit small hands perfectly. Our ABS palm grips give the most impact resistance while carbon provides the lightest option.

SUP Bent Shaft

Werner Paddles is the innovator of bent shaft in SUP. Bent shaft aligns your wrists in a more ergonomic position to reduce fatigue while grasping the shaft for the confidence of full hand contact. Proper ergonomic hand, wrist and forearm position alleviates stress and strain and the potential for injury. This is a great fit option for those who over grip when racing and surfing, or anyone looking to protect their body. Our design also allows for a longer stroke. With the blade being aligned in front of your hand, each stroke you take the blade gets to the water sooner, lengthening the power phase of your stroke. Size this the same way you would as a traditional straight shaft.

SUP Performance Travel

Performance Travel-Fits perfect in the travel bag of an inflatable SUP board or in your suitcase so you take your favorite paddle to that exotic location with you. Our adjustable length system offers a solid and precise feel and allows to fit boards of different thicknesses or share with a friend. With a simple system, less parts to break, a smooth shaft feel, the grip telescopes with six length settings. 70″ fits paddlers from 5’0″ to 5’8″ 74″ fits paddlers from 5’4″ to 6’1″ 80″ fits paddlers from 5’11” to 6’6″ Individual pieces of our 3 piece option may not float when unassembled. Avoid dropping parts into the water.

SUP Performance Adjustable

Our Performance Adjustable SUP paddles offer a solid and precise feel even when you need to fine tune paddle length. With a simple system, less parts to break, a smooth shaft feel, the grip telescopes with six length settings. This system is great for sharing between people of close height. It is also great for people who own boards of different thickness, or adjusting between touring and surfing lengths. For river runners, go short in the rapids and longer in flat-water. Our best selling 74″ size, fits the average height for ladies (5’4″) and includes the most popular height for men (5’10”) as it expands to fit paddlers up to 6’1″. To fit needs outside of this group we also have 2 more sizes. 70″ fits paddlers from 5’0″ to 5’8″ and 80″ fits paddlers from 5’11” to 6’6″.

SUP Straight Shaft

If one can commit to a good loose grip style of paddling, our straight shaft option is solid choice. For the entry level paddler, it allows the ability to save and invest in lighter swing weight because straight shaft is less expensive. For others they simply like the traditional, simple feel of a straight shaft. Our attention to detail in texture, indexing and flex allows for confident control and comfort all day long.

SUP Small Fit

Werner innovated small fit paddles and in our decades of experience the large majority of female paddlers benefit from this option. Available on our most popular SUP paddles, ladies not can match a Small or Mid-sized blade with a small diameter shaft and innovative small sized grip. Performance starts with the proper fit and you will immediately be able to grasp with a lighter grip for better technique and to eliminate fatigue. To see if Small Fit is best for you, measure your hand size by placing a ruler at the base of your hand (at the joint of your wrist) and measuring to the tip of your middle finger. If you measure smaller than 6.5″ we suggest small shaft. Longer, go to our standard shaft. If you are on the line, we suggest you try both at an authorized Werner dealer and see for yourself. Paddlers with shorter, thicker fingers also gravitate to small shaft. More control, more comfort with Small Fit
