What is Prinsted Like?
Prinsted is a charming, tranquil stretch nestled on the edge of Chichester Harbour. Rather than sandy shores, it features a pebbly, sometimes muddy foreshore and small boat launches – often overlooked, but beloved by local paddle boarders, windsurfer, kayakers and walkers alike.
- Stoney Upper Beach: The main beach above tidelines is stoney and often has a seaweed line marking the upper level.
- A stoney and muddy lower beach: The tidal area is quite stoney and muddy so footwear is preferable.
- Footpaths: around both side of the bay is a well maintained footpath.
- Exposed mud flats: as the tide falls back, the birds descend on to the mud flats, to benefit from the rich crustations and plant life that is visible.
Dog Access at Prinsted
Walking paths around Prinsted Beach are popular for dog-walking, and many dogs stroll freely along the shore. While specific regulations aren’t extensively documented, dog-friendly walking routes are commonly noted . It’s always wise to check local signage if heading in winter or during conservation-sensitive seasons. Also note that some of the mud flats are very deep and could easily entrap a dog walking out there.
Water Quality at Prinsted
Prinsted shares water quality conditions with the wider Chichester Harbour area. Although not a designated bathing site, the harbour is frequently tested, often meeting or exceeding the minimum EU bathing standards. However, occasional elevated E. coli levels in shellfish mean caution is advised when consuming local seafood, such as oyster.

What Watersports Lessons Can You Do at Prinsted?
Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
We often use Prinsted for our beginner paddleboard lessons as well as some more advanced downwind lessons. It really is a great place offering safe conditions, protected from the waves and main currents that are more obvious in the open harbour.
Windsurfing
With a wide range of wind directions blowing into the bay, Prinsted offers some great beginner sailing options. Flat water, consistent wind and multiple landing and launch spots.
Wing foiling and wing surfing
Wing intro lessons are great at Prinsted as you sail sail out and if you struggle, simply land on the beach and walk back. For wing foiling we have to be mindful of the tides as there are some big rocks and gravel banks that could easily damage the kit.
