bracklesham beach and bay

What is Bracklesham Beach Like?

Bracklesham Bay, located on the Manhood Peninsula in West Sussex, is a distinctive beach that blends shingle and sand. Its character changes with the tide, creating unique zones that appeal to families, watersports enthusiasts, and fossil hunters alike.

  • Shingle Upper Beach: The higher sections of the bay are lined with shingle banks, typical of the Sussex Heritage Coastline. These areas act as natural sea defences and provide raised vantage points, popular for sunset watching and viewing the Isle of Wight on a clear day.
  • Sandy Lower Beach: Moving closer to the shoreline, the beach becomes flat and sandy, with shallow waters that are safe for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking. Local schools such as Surfs SUP Watersports  and other Bracklesham-based kiteboard instructors often use this area as a launch spot for beginners, intermediate and advanced lessons.
  • Exposed Wet Sand at Low Tide: At low tide, the bay reveals an expansive stretch of wet, compact sand, perfect for family beach games, dog walking, or sand art. The flat surface also makes it a recognised training ground for windsurfers and kitesurfers, who benefit from the consistent winds blowing across the bay.
  • Fossil Hunting Opportunities: Bracklesham Bay is internationally recognised for its Eocene fossil beds, with finds including shark teeth, bivalves, gastropods, and corals. Fossil hunters often combine visits here with trips to nearby East Wittering and Selsey, both of which are also known for coastal discoveries.

Dog Access at Bracklesham Bay vs. West Wittering

One of the key advantages of Bracklesham Bay is that it is a dog-friendly beach all year round. Owners can enjoy long coastal walks with their dogs, particularly at low tide when the sands stretch out towards East Wittering or down to Selsey Bill. The Beach Bracklesham café also provides outdoor seating and water bowls, making it an easy stop for pet owners.

In contrast, West Wittering Beach, just a short drive away, operates a seasonal dog restriction:

  • From May to September, dogs are not allowed on the main swimming beach.
  • During these months, dogs must be walked in designated zones, mainly to the west of the beach towards East Head.
  • From October to April, dogs are welcome across the full stretch of West Wittering.

This difference means that while West Wittering attracts families in summer for its facilities and Blue Flag award-winning beach, Bracklesham Bay has become a favourite for dog owners seeking unrestricted access throughout the year.

Water Quality at Bracklesham Bay

Water quality at Bracklesham Bay is monitored by the UK Environment Agency during the bathing season (May to September). The bay has consistently been rated as having “Good” bathing water quality, meaning it is generally safe for swimming, paddling, and watersports such as paddleboarding and windsurfing.

Unlike West Wittering, which has achieved Blue Flag status due to its excellent water quality and facilities, Bracklesham Bay does not hold a Blue Flag but still maintains high standards for bathing. Water quality can sometimes be affected after periods of heavy rain due to local run-off, but overall the bay is regarded as a safe and popular spot for water-based activities.

For real-time updates, visitors can check the Environment Agency’s bathing water quality map or local signage near the beach access points.

Local Connections and Nearby Beaches

Bracklesham Bay forms part of a wider network of West Sussex beaches:

  • West Wittering Beach: A short drive away, this Blue Flag award-winning beach is famous for its golden sands and windsurfing culture. Many visitors staying in Bracklesham will also spend time at West Wittering for its extensive facilities and car parks.
  • Selsey: To the south lies Selsey, known for its fishing heritage, fresh seafood, and the RNLI Lifeboat Station. The town’s connection to the sea complements Bracklesham’s fossil-hunting appeal, making the two locations a natural pairing for a day out.

Visitor Experience

Alongside its natural beauty, Bracklesham Bay has community-focused amenities. The Beach Bracklesham café sits directly on the seafront, serving as a hub for walkers, surfers, and families. Its position makes it one of the most popular spots for refreshments with a panoramic sea view.

This blend of geological significance, recreational opportunities, and links to neighbouring coastal destinations makes Bracklesham Bay a versatile beach, offering more than just sand and sea. It connects visitors to a wider story of Sussex’s coastal culture, heritage, and natural history.

Our Watersports Lessons - Bracklesham

What Watersports Can You Do in Bracklesham?

Paddleboarding (SUP)

Our stand-up paddleboarding lessons are ideal for all levels. On windless days, the flat waters make Bracklesham one of the best locations to try SUP for the first time, but this place really lends itself to our sup surfing sessions or those trying to paddle open water and rougher seas. For real beginner and family paddle board lessons we tend to head inland a few minutes to our calmer canal. Our guided paddleboarding sessions run in Chichester Harbour as well.

Windsurfing

With cross-shore breezes and a wide launch zone, windsurfing in Bracklesham Bay is incredibly rewarding. We provide full tuition and equipment for beginners through to advanced levels. That said, the sea can be challenging, so a lot of our beginner lessons happen in the harbour at a place called Prinsted.

Wingfoiling

The latest craze on the coast – wingfoiling is thrilling and accessible with the right coaching. Our wingfoil courses are led by qualified, passionate instructors who live and breathe the sport.   Foiling is great, but the sea can make it tougher as we get waves, so some of our foil lessons are taken to the harbour.

The sweeping views across the Solent and the Isle of Wight make it one of the most scenic places in West Sussex to ride.

Tips for beach riding:

  • Horses are permitted year-round from Pagham Harbour to Shore Road in East Wittering.
  • Plan your ride at low tide—avoid the three hours before and after high tide.
  • Stick to safe speeds, respect other beach users, and never jump groynes.
  • Use the Bracklesham slipway area for access, but note that parking is limited.

This combination of freedom, fresh sea air, and natural beauty makes Bracklesham Bay a top choice for equestrian adventures.
